Board Wipes

By now, most of the best board wipes in commander have found their way into old borders.  Let's take a look at some of the ones I find myself playing the most.

White

When it comes to board wipes, white is #1.  White can remove all permanent types and as of lately there are becoming more that can serve almost as a one sided board wipe.  Retribution of the Meek is great in an Alesha or Arcades deck while Winds of Rath may be more appropriate in an aura based strategy.  Austere Command is one of my favorites and I try and put it into every deck I build that includes white.  It's worth the two extra mana for me in comparison to Wrath of God to be able to get anything that needs to go.  We currently don't have access to Vanquish the Horde or Farewell but those are the only ones I'd say we're missing.  Maybe Vanquish the Horde will appear in Innistrad Remastered?

Blue

The only one I play from this list regularly is Cyclonic Rift and I know some people frown at this card but I still use it.  I think, if you used responsibly it's okay.  I don't think I've ever really upset anyone by using it when I could get the win shortly after.  What you don't want to do is use it just to prolong an already long game.  Wash Out is a really cool card that I wish I found room for more often than I do.

Black

Toxic Deluge is the best board wipe in black as it gets rid of indestructible creatures and the mana cost is low.  Mutilate is great in a mono-black deck which is probably the best mono-colored deck you can build with the retro frame restriction.  (See Syr Konrad) Massacre Girl is fun in decks where she can be reanimated and used again and again in from your graveyard.  I think it would be nice to see Damnation printed in the old borders but other than that, I am happy.  I rarely play Damnation these days anyway.  Living Death is a synergistic board wipe that works great but I've touched on that one in other posts already.

Red

Red is so good at blowing up artifacts!  Vandalblast is a great card for blowing up artifacts and it has this hidden benefit of only having a mana value of one.  This is relevant if you're playing cards like Dark Confidant!  It also is not a dead card if none of your opponents are playing artifact based decks as there is always a Sol Ring or Arcane Signet that deserves to be blown up!  Crater hellion is not a popular card but it is so nostalgic for me.  The art is amazing and it is great in a deck that you can reanimate it from.  It's also really fun with Repercussion out.  Blasphemous Act is a great card that rarely costs more than 1 to play.  But, it does not go well with Dark Confidant!  It's also one of my favorite wincons in combination with Repercussion.

Green

Green relies on having the biggest threats on the table so it doesn't use many creature board wipes.  What green does not have a lot of though is fliers.  So, a card like Whirlwind is beneficial to put into a mono-green deck.  hush is a card that i always put in my initial deck lists and cut later but I wish I didn't.  The art is great by Rebecca Guay and it is able to be cycled away when you don't need it.  I think I don't play it often because I typically have more enchantments in my deck than the average Joe, so I usually favor Calming Verse.  Seeds of Innocence is on the reserved list so be aware of that if you decide it's a card you would want to play.  As far as I know, it's the only way of getting rid of artifacts en mass in mono-green so you decide if it's worth the downside.

Multi-Colored

Fire Covenant is a really fun card and I think it is underplayed.  Supreme Verdict is great when you can't risk your spell getting countered and fits great in an Azorius control deck where you may not have many creatures you monster!  Damn is my absolute favorite board wipe/single target removal spell and it gets windmill slammed into every.single.deck it can go into.  I recommend you do the same.

As you can see there are lots of options for board wipes in commander and this is one instance where the retro cards are not actually that far behind the rest of the meta.  There are still several board wipes I would like to see make their way in the retro cards but I'm pretty happy with what we currently have.
