The Monster Mash

Grusilda, Monster Masher makes for the perfect Halloween commander.  Let's break tradition and talk about a silver bordered commander card that is all about making a graveyard smash.

While silver bordered commander cards are not legal, I've never had any objections to playing her in a game of commander.  The Rule 0 conversation exists for a reason, take advantage of it!  Grusilda, Monster Masher has a really cool ability of smashing two creature cards in any one graveyard together into one super creature! The reason I built this deck originally was to combine both sides of B.F.M. together with her ability.  Once B.F.M. was combined, I would attach one opponent with it and fling it at another.

Spooky Cards

There is no shortage of magic cards throughout the years with spooky art, some are downright disturbing.  These are some of my favorites.  Headless Horseman is one of my favorite stories of all time, as a result this card always makes it into my Halloween decks.

Who To Mash?

Pew Pew!

Gobling Sharpshooter + Harvester of Souls is a one sided board wipe plus you get to keep the board clear.  With this combo, you get the added benefit of drawing so many cards.  The downfall is it can feel bad for your opponents and it won't have haste.   You can get around this part by activating Grusilda during your opponents end step.

Devouring Strossus + Marionette Apprentice is a nasty combo if you have some sac fodder on the board, it can mean an instant win.  Marionette Master would be a better fit because instead of Fabricate 1, it has Fabricate 3, that would mean 30 damage at instant speed to all remaining opponents.

Phage the Untouchable + Platinum Angel is hilarious.  Platinum Angel stops the downside of Phage for us and allows us to reanimate her without any fear of dying.  Anytime you can make Phage work, it's worth it.

Avatar of Woe + Eater of the Dead is another one sided board wipe.  The art on these cards definitely stick with spooky Halloween theme.  Eater of the Dead is not a very common card in games of commander so you get those bonus points. ;-)

Thrashing Wumpus + Spirit of the Night will help keep the board clear of chump blockers while allowing you to swing in with a hasty first strike, flying trampler.  I think is a devastating combo and the art on them is awesome.  I have never seen a Thrashing Wumpus in a game of commander so that is pretty cool too!

Master of Cruelties + Dauthi Voidwalker help you get an essentially unblockable Master of Cruelties to reduce an opponents life total to 1.  Dauthi Voidwalker will also provide a little bit of grave hate along the way to prevent any shenanigans your opponents may be up to.

The reason for the season!  The number one coolest thing you could ever do in this deck!  Victimize is another great way of getting this two card combo assembled.  Buried Alive is your absolute best friend as you can tutor both pieces of B.F.M. directly to the graveyard.

Load That Yard

Cards That Help Make It Work

If you can give your creatures haste, it makes almost all of the mashed creatures significantly better.  What I like about Anger is that, worse case scenario, you can use it to mash together with another creature you want out of the yard for value.  It should be easy to get into the yard with the amount of self milling and discard outlets you can pack into your deck as well.  Sneak Attack is really helpful for getting your creatures into the yard as well and will let you cheat them into play prior to doing so for a surprise block or attack for a very low mana rate.  Key to the City is hilarious if you imagine the B.F.M. using some small key to get in for 99 damage unblocked while also helping fill the graveyard.

As you can see, there are a lot of really cool things you can do with Grusilda.  Keep in mind when playing her that you can use your opponents graveyard as well as your own to make your creations.  The only requirement is that both creatures that are mashed together are from the same graveyard.  I hope one day "Uncommanders" will be allowed in commander games.  Until then, remember Rule 0 and don't load your deck full of crazy "un" cards that will cause your opponents to hate the play experience.  When I play this deck, the only "un" cards I use are the two sides of B.F.M. and Grusilda.  I let the table know what is in the deck prior to shuffling up to be sure they're okay with it.  Since the entire purpose of the deck for me revolves around B.F.M., I want to share the second best card to help this happen with you.  It's Victimize and because the two creatures come into play at the same time, it will work.
